Pima Cotton 101. Pima cotton is one of the two distinct species of cotton that end up on store shelves. The most common type is Upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum), comprising nearly 90% of all cotton produced around the world. The remaining 10% is made up of two higher-quality cottons — Egyptian cotton and pima cotton.

The American cotton variety Pima cotton is often compared to Egyptian cotton, as both are used in high quality bed sheets and other cotton products. While Pima cotton is often grown in the American southwest, the Pima name is now used by cotton-producing nations such as Peru, Australia and Israel. Not all products bearing the Pima name are made with the finest cotton: American-grown ELS Pima cotton is trademarked as Supima cotton.

Pima cotton is classified as an “extra-long staple cotton,” a term that refers to the length of the individual cotton fibers. It’s considered to have extremely long fibers (1-3/8" staple length), while ordinary cotton fibers measure between 1/2" to 3/4". Pima cotton is a superior blend of cotton also known as extra-long-staple (ELS) cotton. Due to its long-staple Pima cotton is durable and highly absorbent.
